I requested a diagnostic because my car was loud. I paid about $162 and was told it was the alternator belt and it was classified as low priority. The battery started draining so we took it back in a couple of weeks later and the entire altenator needed to be replaced (just under $800 with a coupon). A day or so later, the engines dies, but restarts. I scheduled an oil change and let them know the issue. They seemed to want to add another diagnostic on top of the alternator check (under warrenty) instead of just offering the alternator check- whatever the miscommunication was, it felt misleading. Just to rule out the altenator, I took it back in and of course they said it was fine. But I'm out over $1000 and my car is worse off. If you pay for a diagnostic, get a full report of what they did and didn't look at. My gut says they got a thousand bucks out of me without really caring about the condition of my car.

Couple days later, engine stops randomly... They'll check it out for $162 (no credit towards previous repair warranty). Was told the diagnostic isn't a full car diagnostic, just a suspected system check. No report. Received a coupon for 2 free donuts and a $15 discount on the next repair they knew we'd need. Update: it's my car. I asked my husband to find a new mechanic since my guys had closed. I'm loyal and appreciate transparency and consistency regardless of cost. There's a clear misunderstanding on the alternator check because I'm at least entitled to that. It makes sense to be confused and upset on paying for a new diagnostic without knowing what the other one uncovered, especially when all this happened in a short window of time. If the first diagnostic uncovered the issue we suspected it to be and you looked at nothing else then you're essentially leaving it up to me to decide what's wrong with my car and I pay you to agree or disagree but without ever knowing what you actually looked at. At least at my yearly physical my doctor discusses everything instead of me guessing which body part needs attention first.

We're sorry your feeling frustrated about Damon's car, Kris. As we spoke to him when he came in - testing, much like going to the doctor, is specific to the symptoms presented. Just like a doctor will have to do multiple seperate tests to figure out seperate things like a bum knee, hair loss, and vertigo, vehicles are the same way if they present new and different symptoms. A common misconception with our industry is there is a single machine you plug into a vehicle that prints out all of the problems, current or future, that need to be solved and that is simply just not the case. We offered to retest Damon's alternator again under warranty at no cost but also clarified that if it was a new and different issue, further testing would need to be performed. He declined both of the above. We don't outwardly advertise it but we commonly send hand written thank you cards with coupons for other local small NKC businesses to our appreciated customers. We're sorry if this came off as insincere. Even if you decide Northtown is not your preferred repair shop, we still hope you enjoy some sweet treats from Donut King.

Brought in my spare car because of oil leak. NTA repaired timing cover. Less than 36,000 miles later oil leaking more. Brought it back to diagnose. Told I would be charged for dye test to check previous work. Was ok with that. Now being told after adding power steering fluid the power steering is what’s leaking. Due test not done. There’s clearly oil everywhere. Wish I could post the images. Told they can’t diagnose repaired timing cover due to power steering issue. I called around and others said they could diagnose it regardless also got quotes for power steering. Northtowne Mazda is now doing the power steering issue and diagnosing the timing cover (first) cheaper than this shop quoted me. Go figure 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ll report back on if in fact the timing cover is in need of warranty repair and how that goes.

We're sorry your feeling frustrated about the 06 Mazda, Christine. Like we illustrated to the gentleman that dropped off your vehicle: the described leak was so severe, we would need to wash down the engine compartment to confirm the issue. Should the existing leak be timing cover related, this would have been under warranty at no charge. We did not detect any timing cover leaks after the initial wash, so the technician added dye to the oil to monitor for the future. During this process, the technician topped off your power steering fluid as it was empty and our policy is to top off low fluids. As soon as the power steering system was filled, the power steering pressure hose started spraying a fine mist over the engine on the timing cover side. We conveyed all of this to you verbally and via photos and provided estimates to correct your original concern (fluid leaks). That isn't to say there may also be other further oil leaks but, unfortunately, when there is fluid being sprayed all over the engine compartment, that needs to be addressed first before other leaks can be confirmed. Hopefully this helps provide some clarification and please note your timing cover is still covered under warranty so long as it can be confirmed as leaking.
